5.3L Vortec 5300 is basically an LS1 and can be had with transmission in a junkyard for under a grand. Which is, uhh, a lot less than an LSjuan.
Also, the 4.8 is more than adequate and even cheaper.

The 4.8 might actually fit. My Jeep has a 250 cubic inch 6-cyl engine in it right now.

Lol, don't feel too bad. The original AMC engine is long gone. The Chevy 250 6-cylinder engine is a bolt in engine swap and much more reliable.
