I lean towards Hitachi but either one will probably be fine.

Also I may have some used 200s around if that's of interest.

I agree that both are fine. However, the WD has a larger buffer cache and you can never have too much buffer.

I got a 2004 dell optiplex 280 p4 2.8 but 4 slots pc3200 4gb max memory

I found the old 40-80 gb ide drives on these old rigs are slow with terrible transer rates. Figure to upgrade while the old stuff is avail and work is buying
