I picked up a new-used Kenwood HF radio today. It's a Kenwood TS-820S, from the '70's but still running strong. It is a hybrid radio with vacuum tube finals. Yes, I'm a true geek. This thing weighs a ton, well it feels like it.

Here's a picture (not mine):

and more pictures here (not mine either): http://oldhamdave.com/ts-820_820s.htm

Shit do I need to get an HF antenna put up and try to start a GAG net?

That is sexy as hell

I'm selling a Winchester Lever action and it's tempting as hell to pick up a big multibander...

Compared to the new rigs of today, these old-school rigs are cheap ... just as good, if not better. It even has a built-in power supply. The best part about this rig - whatcha see is whatcha get - no menus to remember, just dial it in. Everything that can be set or adjusted on the Kenwood TS-820S is right in front of you on the front panel. No software menus (from hell) to remember. It's time to get off my butt and get some wire in the air and get on the air.

I have another HF rig, but since it will run on batteries, I will probably use it for mobile or Field Day. It's a Yaesu FT-897d:

I have one of these but I never got around to getting an antenna up since I moved..

Between work and all the other stuff I do I just have not had time for it.

BTW, I feel your pain ; my FT-897d is still in the box - never been opened - after almost 4 years! When I have time, I have nobody available to help; when people are available to help, I have no time. Now that I have a 5 1/2 month old daughter, I barely have time to sleep. I'm determined to get some wire in the air. I want share Amateur radio with my daughter - talking to people all over the world.
